Selecting a Sedation Dentist

It is important to note that not all dentists are trained in sedation dentistry. The following tips are helpful when selecting a dentist for sedation dental procedures:

  1. Inquire about the dentist and staff members' specific level of education in sedation dentistry. There is limited training provided in dental school specifically for sedation dentistry. However, there are continuing education programs provided by organizations such as the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation. Additionally, specialty training in anesthesia can be obtained during a dentist's post-graduate work.
  2. Inquire about the dentist's participation in organizations that provide ongoing education for sedation dentistry and other related procedures such as the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, or the American Society of Dental Anesthesiologists.
  3. Inquire about the type of monitoring equipment that is used while performing a procedure with sedation including: a pulse oximeter, oxygen equipment and reversal medication agents that aid in case of an adverse reaction.
  4. Review the Informed Consent form for details about the procedure, equipment, advantages, and risks associated with the treatment. All experienced sedation dentists will have a comprehensive form and will be willing to spend time with you to discuss any aspect of sedation dentistry.
  5. Bring a complete list of your medical history, including any medications and supplements you are taking, and review the list with the dentist to ensure that sedation dentistry is the right choice for your particular situation.
  6. Inquire about receiving a pre- and post-procedure instruction list. This list will prepare you and your companion for the day of the procedure.
