The endodontist removes the inflamed or infected pulp tissue and cleans, shapes and disinfects the canal so it can be filled to seal the canal pulp space. Usually following endodontic treatment you will need to return to your general dentist in a timely manner to have the tooth restored in order to permanently seal and protect the treated root canal from further contamination from saliva and restore the tooth to full function.
A crown is usually required in most teeth, but your general dentist will make the final determination.
How does root canal treatment save the tooth?
