What is Endodontics?

Endodontic treatment is commonly referred to as root canal treatment.

All dentists receive training in providing endodontic treatment, but often general dentist will refer patients to a specialist in endodontics called an Endodontist due to the difficulty in treating some teeth.

It is one of the five dental specialties, and it specifically deals with the pulp tissue (nerve) of the tooth. “Endo” is the Greek word for inside, and in reference to the tooth, it is the blood supply found deep in the tooth from the end of the root up into the crown.

This tissue is important for the formation and development of the tooth, but once the tooth is fully mature, the tooth can survive without the pulp.
