Why would I need an Endodontic procedure (root canal)?

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp tissue becomes irritated or infected, usually by tooth decay or trauma, and require removal to treat or prevent a root canal infection from spreading form the root canal into the bone surrounding the root (apical periodontitis).

Sometimes it will be necessary to remove the pulp tissue in order for the dentist to place a post so that a crown can be placed on the tooth. This is know as elective endodontic treatment for restorative purposes. Endodontic treatment is utilized to save teeth that would otherwise usually require extraction.
